Why something old, new, borrowed, blue?

When it comes to wedding tradition, most of us are familiar with the old well known saying ‘something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue’.
The saying dates back to the Victorian times, and is based on a poem:

Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.
Each ‘something’  item refers to a good luck token for a bride. The custom is that if the bride carries all four items on her wedding day, she will have a long and happy marriage.

• Something old – continuity with the bride’s family and the past
• Something new – health, fortune and success in your new life as married woman
• Something borrowed – an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride
• Something blue– this dates back to the bible when blue was thought to represent fidelity and purity and blue was a popular colour for wedding gowns.

What will you use?

We have added a few items to the lists below, please add your something items in the comments box below and we will add them to our list.

Something Old

• A relative’s wedding gown

• A family heirloom: jewelry, veil or headpiece

  • Janets ‘older half’

Something New
• New shoes
• New jewelry
• New wedding Gown
• New lingerie or garter

Something Borrowed
• The most popular is an item of jewelry
• A veil or headpiece or even a wedding dress that was worn by a family member.

Something Blue
• Blue lingerie or garter would be the most popular
• Jewelry with a blue stone.

And, finally the silver sixpence. A silver sixpence placed into a brides left shoe is said to bring a bride wealth, joy and happiness throughout her married life.

While we can’t help with the something old and something borrowed, at www.bbbonbon.ie we do have the new and blue covered.

Blue Wedding Favours from www.bbbonbon.ie

Something Blue Wedding Favours

Our ‘Something Blue range’ are timeless designs that come in three shades of blue, we now add a little silver horseshoe charm to wish our brides good luck.

The simpliest and easiest way to incorporate blue in your wedding favours, is simply to add one blue sweet to your chosen confectionery. This allows you to match your favours to your chosen theme or colour scheme while still incorporating the very important ‘something blue’.
We would love to hear what your something old, new, borrowed and blue are going to be. Please share your ideas and thoughts with all the other ‘brides to be’ in our comment box below and we will add them to the lists.

Many thanks and hope to see some wild and wonderful ‘something’ items to add.

Wedding poems from BBbonbon Wedding Favours

Wedding speeches are the highlight of the wedding reception, so it’s important to get them just right. We at www.bbbonbon.ie Wedding favours, think these wedding poems are lovely and would make a wonderful addition to a fathers wedding speech. There is one for a son and one for a daughter.

Today (dear Son), as you walk down the aisle
You’ll see all the faces wearing a smile.
But as we remember those young tender years
Our smiles will conceal a few hidden tears.
They’re not tears of sorrow, but tears full of joy
As we’re both thinking back to our dear little boy
And now you have grown up and made us so proud
As you smile for the camera and the rest of the crowd
Remember dear (name) as you take your new wife
You’re still very much a part of our life!
We’re gaining a daughter. not losing a son,
You’re new lives as husband and wife have begun
So be blissfully happy and enjoy your ‘Big Day’
Have a wonderful marriage with a rose strewn way!

Today (dear daughter), as you walk down the aisle
You’ll see all the faces wearing a smile.
But as we remember those young tender years
Our smiles will conceal a few hidden tears.
It isn’t through sadness , our emotions just whirl
As we’re both thinking back to our dear little girl
And now you have grown and made us so proud
As you smile for the camera and the rest of the crowd
Remember dear (name) as you become a new wife
You’re still very much a part of our life!

Here at www.bbbonbon.ie we have Holy Communion favours for boys, First Communion favours for girls, Prayer book favours, Communion favour cakes, Holy Communion favour boxes, First Communion tulle favours and lots more.
Each favour is filled with five pieces of confectionery the most popular and traditional are sugared almonds and chocolate dragees. The five sweets are symbolic they represent Health, Wealth, Longevity, Fertility and Happiness.
All our Communion favours are personalised, we use a little white card with your child’s details, for example:

these five sweets which represent: Health

Expectant Mother & Baby Hospital Bag Checklist:

How time flies by, 7 months ago you thought this time would never come! It has and now you must prepare for the birth and home coming of your new baby. Exciting or what, the memories are flooding back to me.
It’s one of those things we get very excited about, packing for the hospital birth. For my last baby, my daughters packed the baby’s hospital bag, it was pink and we did not know the sex of our new pending baby!!! I gave birth to a little girl, but it didn’t matter what colour the baby was, what matters is that you make your other children excited and involved in the preparation of their new sibling. This is as important as the preparation of the hospital bag, in itself.
Whatever you do pack, don’t take everything and the kitchen sink, because it is likely that the midwives will ask your partner to take it back home again.
Keep in mind though that you might need to stay for a longer period, if you have a caesarean section or if baby needs supervision after birth. But, then again, that’s what family and partners are for: to bring you more things if you need them after birth.
• A long T-shirt or front-opening nightdress, dressing gown and slippers;
• Drinks and snacks for you and your partner;
• Labour supplies for example Tens machine, massage oil, aromatherapy candles, whatever you intend to use, I didn’t personally use any of these products
• Underwear and maternity pads,
• If breast feeding, maternity bra & breast pads
• Toiletries Bag including shampoo, conditioner, hair brush, tooth brush, tooth paste,
• Make-up bag
• Coming home outfit for the baby, including little hat
• One blanket, thickness depending on the time of year
• Nappies For Newborn
• Wipes
• 3 baby grows
• 5 baby vest
• If not breast feeding, hospitals generally provide readymade baby formula
• Maternity clothes to go home in (your tummy doesn’t magically disappear after delivery-maternity clothes will be the most comfortable to travel home in)
• Purse
• Mobile phone, plus charger
• Camera/Camcorder
• Photo of other children at home, it will comfort them when they see it on our dresser when they come to visit their new brother/sister.
• Hand sanitizer (for visitors and you)
• Hospital paperwork required for check in

Now just sit back, relax, and allow everyone to pamper you while you wait for your new baby to arrive.

Once your little bundle of joy has finally arrived, everything in the house will now be pink or blue and won’t you love it! Well there is more, pink, blue and what have you, presented at www.bbbonbon.ie in the shape of christening and baptism favours. Your guests will be delighted in receiving delicate little christening and baptism favour gifts, a thank you and a memory keepsake of that special day spent together. All our favours can be personalised and include confectionery. All our favours can be personalised and include confectioner of your choice.

HOW TO PERSONALISE YOUR FAVOURS

Favours are a little gift given to your guests as a thank you, we at www.bbbonbon.ie like to personalise all our favors, this service is FREE of charge and therefore included on the price.

There are many ways to personalise your favors, we as a standard write the name of the child and the date of the occasion, that being a First Communion or a Christening, we also add the meanings of the traditional 5 sweets included in all favours, they symbolise healh, wealth, longevity, fertility and happiness.

For a First Communion a lovely suggestion is for the Communion child to write a little thank you card that can be added to the favours or indeed a little poem or a quote that the child likes.

If the child is good a drawing, a small picture and just the word thank you inside each favour box can go a long way……

As for Christenings, the choice is endless, again, anything from a quote chosen by the parents, or mybe a few words on the meaning of the child’s name, or indeed a note written as if the child had written it will definitely blow your guests away.

We at www.bbbonbon.ie are more than happy to answer all your enquiries on how to personalise your children’s favours and  how to make these little gifts even more special!
